Tidewater Scale & Butcher Supplies, Inc. was founded in 1969 by Joseph Early Stovall, a proud U.S. Navy veteran and respected figure in the meat and supermarket industries. After a career that included leadership roles at Cat & Fiddle, Colonial Stores, Kroger, and Giant Open Air Markets, Joe saw a need for a local company that could provide high-quality weighing systems, equipment, and service to butchers, grocers, and processors across the region.
Joe’s vision was clear: serve the hardworking people who keep our food systems running—efficiently, honestly, and reliably. From the beginning, Tidewater Scale became more than just a supplier; it became a trusted partner for businesses across Virginia and beyond.

What began as Joe’s personal endeavor quickly grew into a multigenerational family business. His sons, Ed and Tom Stovall, joined their father in the company and played instrumental roles in expanding Tidewater Scale’s reach and reputation. Together, they helped grow the business into a leading provider of equipment and service solutions for a wide range of industries—from independent butcher shops to major commissaries and food processors.
Over the decades, Ed and Tom have remained committed to the same principles that guided their father: hard work, fairness, and a deep respect for the customer.
